Description

Body elongated, conical, 5.42-9.71 mm in length, 2.21-3.43 mm in width, ratio of body width to body length 1:2.45-1:3.02. Acetabulum sub-terminal, 1.17-2.12 mm in external diameter, ratio to body length 1:3.87-1:6.28, of pisum type (sensu Näsmark, 1937) in median sagittal section; units of circular muscles in lateral sides as follows : d.e.c.m.1. 19-24, d.e.c.m. 2.7-12, d.i.c.m. 48-68, v.e.c.m. 17-21, v.i.c.m.42-54, m.e.c.m. 14-17. Pharynx 0.49-0.72 mm in length, 0.58-0.81 mm in breadth; ratio to body length 1:11-1:19.49, to diameter of acetabulum 1:2.14-1:3.16; of calicophoron type (sensu Dinnik, 1964) in median sagittal section. Oesophagus 0.36-0.58 mm long, no bulb or posterior sphincter. Caeca in lateral fields, forming irregular bends throughout their course, reaching up to level of acetabulum. Testes tandem, lobed; anterior testis 0.45-1.22 mm in length, 0.49-1.62 mm in width; posterior testis 0.31-1.17 mm in length, 0.45-1.71 mm in width. Seminal vesicle thin walled, coiled; pars musculosa and pars prostatica small. Ovary 0.22-0.45 mm by 0.27-0.36 mm, posterior to testes, close to Mehlis' gland. Laurer's canal crossing excretory vesicle or duct, opening on dorsal surface posterior to excretory pore. Vitellaria extending from level of oesophagus to acetabular region, in lateral fields, sometimes encroaching in inter-caecal space in acetabular region. Eggs 0.099-0.135 by 0.054-0.081 mm. Terminal genitalium of ichikawai type (sensu Näsmark, 1937) in median sagittal section, opening ventrally posterior to oesophageal bifurcation.

Remarks

Gupta and Nakhasi (1977) recorded the species P. ichikawai as occurring in cattle and buffaloes in Calicut,( South India). However, as pointed out by Sey (1979a) , the form described by these authors is not P. ichikawai, since the number of d.e.2. muscle units in it was 29 and the acetabulum, paramphistomum type; the number of d.e.2 muscle units in P. ichikawai ranges between 6 and 18 (Sey, 1974). Sey (1979a), therefore, considered P. ichikawai of Gupta and Nakhasi as a synonym of P.gracile Fischoeder, 1901. The present observations are in agreement with the description provided by Eduardo (1982b), in all major features except minor variations in measurements of the organs.
